FAQ
Question: What is Medical Qigong?
Answer: Medical Qigong consists of specific techniques that use the knowledge of the body’s internal and external energy fields to purge, tonify and balance these energies. Medical Qigong therapy offers patients a safe and effective way to rid themselves of toxic pathogens and years of painful emotions that otherwise can cause mental and physical illness. This therapy combines breathing techniques with movement, creative visualization and spiritual intent to improve health, personal power and control over one’s own life.
Medical Qigong, one of the four main branches of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), is a complete system of medicine that recognizes the root causes of symptoms or disease, and treats the patient as a whole. Practiced as an excellent adjunct to Western medicine, (TCM) may successfully treat conditions which Western medicine finds resistant or ambiguous.
The goal of Medical Qigong is to correct bio-energetic imbalances and blockages in the body that accumulate throughout our lifetime. These include poor diet, sedentary lifestyle, injuries, surgery, toxic influences, suppression of emotions and aging. Medical Qigong therapy and Medical Qigong self-treatment both enable the body to return to its natural state of health and harmony. Pain and stress may be relieved and hormones regulated. Deep-seated emotions, which are considered a major root cause of illness within Traditional Chinese Medicine, may be purged and released. This strengthens the body and regulates the internal organs, the nervous system and the immune system.
Question: Who can benefit from MQ therpy?
Answer: Medical Qigong has been used successfully to treat difficult, stubborn, and sometimes chronic conditions that do not respond well to other types of medicine. Children, the elderly, people in frail health, and highly sensitive people tend to respond better to Medical Qigong than other TCM modalities.
All living bodies generate an external field of energy called Wei Qi (pronounced “whey chee”), which translates as “protective energy.” The definition of Wei Qi in Medical Qigong is slightly different than that of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). In classical TCM texts, the Wei Qi field is seen to be limited to the surface of the body, circulating within the tendon and muscle tissues. In Medical Qigong, however, the Wei Qi field also includes the three external layers of the body’s auric and subtle energy fields. This energy originates from each of the internal organs and radiates through the external tissues. There the Wei Qi forms an energy field that radiates from the entire physical body. This field of Qi protects the body from the invasion of external pathogens and communicates with, as well as interacts with, the surrounding universal and environmental energy fields
.
Both internal and external pathogenic factors affect the structural formation of the Wei Qi. The internal factors include suppressed emotional influences (such as anger and grief from emotional traumas). The external factors include environmental influences when they are too severe or chronic, such as Cold, Damp, Heat or Wind, etc. Physical traumas also affect the Wei Qi field.
Any negative interchange affects the Wei Qi by literally creating holes within the matrix of the individual’s external energetic fields. When left unattended, these holes leave the body vulnerable to penetration, and disease begins to take root in the body. Strong emotions, in the form of toxic energy, become trapped within the body’s tissues when we hold back or do not integrate our feelings. These unprocessed emotions block the natural flow of Qi, thus creating stagnant pools of toxic energy within the body.
A vast amount of scientific research has been done to document Qigong’s healing effects. Below is a brief summary of the benefits of Qigong .
GENERAL BENEFITS
Qigong teaches inner strength, increases flexibility, and boosts our immune system. Practicing Qigong reduces stress, stores up energy, increases body awareness, and improves balance and coordination.
PHYSIOLOGICAL BENEFITS
Practitioners report less tension, depression, anger, fatigue, confusion and anxiety. They feel more vigorous, and generally, experience less mood disturbance.
IMMUNE SYSTEM
A study conducted in China indicates that Qigong and Tai Chi may increase the number of T lymphocytes in the body. Also known as T-Cells, these lymphocytes help the immune system destroy bacteria and possibly even tumor cells.
BREATHING, ACHES & BLOOD PRESSURE
In a study done in China, after practicing Qigong for 3 months, participants observed a “big increase in breathing capacity” and a disappearance of backaches and neck aches. Those with high blood pressure claimed a drop of 10 to 15 “points” on both upper and lower blood pressure readings. All participants claimed to have more energy in their daily work.
BALANCE
Qigong is superior to more technological balance therapies. Qigong reduces the risk of injury caused by falling. Complications from these injuries are the sixth leading cause of death in older Americans, and account for about $10 billion in losses per year to the US economy. The Institute of Chicago reports that people with moderate balance problems can be helped by practicing Qigong. Participants of a two months course experienced about a 10 percent improvement in balance. An Emory University study also supports these findings.
MENTAL & PHYSICAL STRESS
Mind & body exercises, such as Qigong, are increasingly replacing high-impact aerobics, long distance running and other body-punishing exercises made popular in the 1980’s. Mind-body workouts are kinder to the joints and muscles. They reduce tension which often contributes to the development of disease, making these gentler types of workouts especially appropriate for high powered, stressed out baby boomers. Unlike most conventional exercises, the mind-body forms are intended to stretch, tone, and relax the whole body, using a series of choreographed movements coordinated with deep breathing.
BEYOND TRADITIONAL CARE
Health practitioners who encounter clients facing problems which do not seem to respond to traditional health care may employ some of the health traditions of other cultures which view the body and mind as a balanced whole. Qigong focuses on the mind-body connection to help facilitate healing through relaxation, breathing, and movement
CURES & PREVENTIONS
Case studies show that Qigong can (1) dramatically help illnesses such as hypertension, asthma, and insomnia; (2) prevent arteriosclerosis and spinal deformity; and (3) shorten the recovery phase from long-term illness.
ELDERLY
According to Qigong enthusiasts, the discipline can prevent many ailments, including high blood pressure, tuberculosis, and diabetes. US scientists agree that Qigong and Tai Chi can offer some important fitness benefits, particularly for older adults.
CARDIO RESPERITORY EFFECTS
Practicing Qigong regularly may delay the decline of cardio respiratory function in older individuals. In addition, Qigong may be prescribed as a suitable aerobics exercise for older adults.
Question: What is the principle behind Medical Qigong Therapy?
Answer: Qi” (pronounced chee), means air, breath of life, or vital energy that flows through all things in the universe.
“Gong” (pronounced gung) means the skill of working with, or cultivating, self-discipline and achievement.
Medical Qigong consists of specific techniques that uses the knowledge of the body’s internal and external energy fields to purge, tonify, and balance these energies. Medical Qigong therapy offers patients a safe and effective way to rid themselves of toxic pathogens and years of painful emotions that otherwise, can cause mental and physical illness. This therapy combines breathing techniques with movement, creative visualization, and spiritual intent to improve health, personal power, and control over one’s own life. Like Chinese Medicine, Medical Qigong views all diseases as a manifestation of an underlying imbalance. The Medical Qigong therapist uses energetic healing protocols on the client to purge toxic emotions from the body’s tissues, eliminate energetic stagnation, as well as strengthen and balance the internal organs. The client may also be given exercise prescriptions, which combine physical movements, breath, sound, visualization, and intention to facilitate the healing in between treatments.
Question: What is the IIMQ?
Answer: The IIMQ is International Institute of Medical Qigong. Fashioned after the Medical Qigong College at the Hai Dian University of Traditional Chinese Medicine in Beijing , China , the IIMQ is known internationally for maintaining the highest standards in Medical Qigong instruction and clinical therapy. The Institute’s achievements in academic and clinical standards have also been recognized by the Medical Qigong Department at the Xi Yuan Hospital (Beijing, China ).
Dr. Alexander, of the Sentient Temple, is now the Florida Director of the International Institute of Medical Qigong. Dennis received his Doctor of Medical Qigong (DMQ) from the International Institute of Medical Qigong in Palm Desert California and is also registered in China. In 2007, Dr. Alexander became the Director of the Florida Branch of The International Institute of Medical Qigong.
Question: Do my feelings have anything to do with my dis-ease?
Answer: According to Chinese Medicine, unresolved emotional factors play an important causal role in the potential for developing disease. Extra anger could do harm to the liver, increased happiness may be bad for the heart, too much fear could hurt the kidney, and increased sadness could impair the lungs. This dose of emotional advice comes from the legendary Huang Di, or “Yellow Emperor,” in his medical compendium written some 5,000 years ago. Traditional Chinese practitioners have been well aware of the relationships between the mind and body for centuries. But unlike, acupuncture and herbal therapies, Medical Qigong treatment may include giving the client exercises to do in the session as well as at home to help them access frozen and unresolved issues that are stored in their bodily tissues. Working with and releasing unresolved emotions are considered critical to the success of the treatment.
Medical Qigong is a form of Chinese Energetic Medicine and is one of the four foundational schools of Traditional Chinese Medicine. Qi in this context is translated to mean “Life Force Energy” and Gong is translated to mean “Acquired Skill.”
Medical Qigong therapy and prescriptions combine the use of breathwork with individual physical movements, creative visualization, and perceptual intention. The primary goal is to purge toxic emotions from within the body’s tissues, eliminate energetic stagnations, as well as strengthen and balance the internal organs and energetic fields.

Question: Is Qigong a form of Chinese Mysticism?
Answer: Since pre-historic times Chinese Yystics fiercely guarded the knowledge that there is a secret to living. This ancient treasure will be revealed as we explore the sacred Chinese teachings about mind, body and spirit. You will learn how these powerful methods diagnose, strengthen and balance Qi-energy in both yourself and others for optimum well-being and health.
You will learn the building blocks of Chinese Medical Theory and begin your practice of Medical Qigong including: Yin Yang Theory, the Evolution of Qi, Five Elements Theory, Wuji Posture, the powerful Five Dao Yin forms, the Yin Meridian Systems, and the Healing Sounds.
Medical Qigong masters have taught that chronic qi blockages can cause energetic formations of turbid Qi. Untreated, these stagnant areas begin to take physical form causing emotional and/or physical imbalance and illness.
Medical Qigong treats both acute and chronic conditions treating the whole body to address physical ailments as well as emotional and energetic discomfort and imbalance. Acupuncture, a sister to Medical Qigong, may be added into the treatment if appropriate and desired. Traditional Chinese Medicine is highly effective in treating a wide variety of conditions from stress induced body tension to insomnia, indigestion, depression, pain disorders as well as chronic illness.
Treatments last 30 minutes and include diagnosis, treatment and, when appropriate, personalized prescriptions for health.

Question: What is Body Restoration Technique?
Answer: The Body Restoration Technique (BRT) was developed by Dr. Eric E. Berg, and is similar in principle to the other energetic medicine techniques discussed on this website. Dr. Berg’s work focuses on Endocrine Disruptor (ED) sensitivities. Endocrine Disruptors are defined as chemicals and hormones in the environment which lodge in our body’s tissue and act like hormones. These EDs cause hormonal chaos by blocking receptor sites and confusing cellular activity. Examples of EDs are pesticides, herbicides, hormonal residues in meat, and chemicals that outgas from plastic containers. DDT is a classic example of a powerful endocrine disruptor that was used on U.S. crops until it was banned in 1973. It can still be detected in U.S. soil and is still actively used on food crops in foreign countries.
BRT hypothesizes that by treating these EDs through acupressure points and gentle stimulation of the spine, the negative effects of EDs on the body can be neutralized and detoxification can be assisted. There are eight focus areas, otherwise known as modules, in BRT:
1. Thyroid
2. Heart/Adrenal/Blood Pressure
3. Blood Sugar
4. Digestion/Arthritis
5. Stubborn Weight
6. Menstrual Cycle
7. Menopause
8. Prostate
Any particular patient may require one, or several, modules to handle a specific health issue. Recommended Reading: Healthy Hormones, Healthy Life by Dr.Eric E. Berg, D.C.
Question: Does Love Have The Power to Heal?
Answer: You say “our Love has impact”, what do you mean by “Love?”
Healing work is all about love, and the practitioner learns to hold a vibratory field of this love. To clarify my terms, when I say “ love,” I am not speaking in the traditional sense of the sort of love that a mother has for a child, a husband for a wife, or about a winged cherub with a bow and arrow. I’ m speaking of a more basic form of love – one that is more innate and intrinsic.
Have you ever watched children play? They seem to always say, “Watch me!” So whether you are from the child’ s culture or any other culture, whether you speak the language or not, if you sit there simply watching that child, he or she will feel loved. Simply giving your attention to a child is automatically experienced as an act of loving. This is what I call nonenculturated or nonassociative love because it has nothing to do with your background, your race, religion, politics, or other beliefs you may hold. Quantum-Touch is about being present, which is an expression of your essence.
I would call this kind of love “ preconditional” and believe that your very nature and essence is made up of the fabric of love. Whether you believe it is there or not (in my opinion) is irrelevant. This love is the essential nature of your being that comes through your hands regardless of your mood. Your fundamental, instinctive, and most basic energy is that of love. You don’ t have to work at it – it is who you are. As a rock does not have to try to be more “ rock-like” and water does not have to try to be wetter, we do not have to try to have more essence of love. We can, however, endeavor to acknowledge how much love there really is.
Intent is something that happens so automatically, most people just miss it. When you simply walk across the room, you already generated the intention to do so. You see, love and intention are among the most natural qualities we have. If you are reading this book to learn to do healing, you already have sufficient love and intention to do a wonderful job. (Excerpt from page 32 of ” Quantum-Touch: The Power to Heal,” 2006 revised edition)
